As a behavioural consultant for children and adolescents, aged 6 to 18 diagnosed with global delays, severe emotional and/or behavioural challenges, those diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
In this capacity I provide developmental and behavioural intervention techniques using developmental models to assist the family and school professionals to effectively meet the needs of the child. I am familiar with a number of methods, which provide individuals on the Autistic Spectrum an opportunity to learn through play and structured teaching techniques.
The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.
like nobody's watching;
Love like you've never been hurt.
Sing like nobody's listening;
Live like it's heaven on earth.
~ Mark Twain.
Techniques used may include:
- Social Commuinication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support (SCERTS Model)
- TEACCH Method
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Therapeutic Play and Play/Interaction Therapies
- Behavioral Techniques
I am available to provide emotional and behavioural assessments to assist in the planning of developmentally functional programs that can provide training in positive behaviour management, engagement, and self co- and self-soothing techniques. I make use of observation, interviews and standardized measures to build a plan in supporting child and family functioning.
In this capacity, I utilize an eclectic approach that is child-centered and family focused to provide the best fit for all the individuals involved in the application of the intervention.
Child and Play Therapy
I provide children and adolescents with a developmentally appropriate therapeutic relationship to assist with difficulties in adjustment, loss, sadness, anxiety, and emotional regulation. Therapy may include short-term, solution focused approaches or may require more long term, process and integration oriented work.
Children who have siblings who struggle with severe emotional or behavioural disorders have unique experiences that are difficult to understand. There may be feelings of resentment, anger, frustration, struggles with their own challenges that may not be perceived as important. This too can affect the overall emotional functioning of that child and family functioning.
I provided child-centered play therapy to children who have witnessed and or experienced physical, mental, or emotional violence. The goal of therapy is to assist a child in gaining a better understanding of events, and gain strategies that will assist them in their ability to calm and sooth themselves, and to learn to trust and access the help of others.
Parent and Caregiver Support
I can assist parents and caregivers in gaining a better understanding of their child's psychological/emotional issues and/or mental health diagnoses. Also, I can provide support to parents who may be struggling with feelings of loss, anxiety and stress that they may be feeling in light of the adjustments they may be required to make due to a child's unique behaviours.
Many parents and/or caregivers struggle when attempting to find a balance between setting appropriate boundaries and exploration. I provide individualized support to the parent in choosing positive behaviour management techniques that fit with the caregiver's parenting philosophies when attempting to play and interact with their children. I will support a parent in learning to better connect with their child at the child's developmental level and playfully engage in reciprocal interactions
